Q. What is the oldest book in the library?

Answer

Hello,

There are really two categories of early books in our collection--(1) bound, hand-written manuscript books/codices, and (2) printed books.

1.  Our oldest bound manuscript is Antiphonarium Cisterciense, hand produced in Italy before 1174.

2.  Our oldest printed book is Tractatus beati Bernhardi de planctu beatae Mariae virginis, printed in Cologne, Germany, around 1470.

Thank you for using our Ask-a-Librarian service and have a good day.

Sincerely,

WMU Library Staff
